Born in Sugarland, Texas, where the Lomaxes discovered Lead Belly, Jawshack sang in church and played in the school band and lived in all sorts of exotic places. In college he scored many films and dance productions, then more or less said to hell with his music degree in favor of the LA scene’s looper’s delights, open mics and bedroom studios and was happy enough. All that changed when he met John Lydon (AKA Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols) at the end of an engineering stint at the Boat Studio in Silverlake. While the rest of the band was recording, the famous musician and unknown assistant passed the time by drinking, singing and talking music. During one of these talks John cried, “All good music is folky, mate!” and our hero took that to heart. He left the Boat for a job at a camping store with nothing to show but recording experience and a prized mix CD from Mr. Rotten. He soon got to recording like mad in a cardboard box in NoHo on a trashcan with a screen. The unique sound that emerged draws heavily from his parents’ best loves: jazz from his father and Arabic music from his mother. From his native Texas he got some bluesy swing and a gospel charm. From his schoolmates he learned RnB, soul and funk. From the Middle East and Europe he brought back the Progidy, Massive Attack and his musical hero, Squarepusher. From LA he’s absorbed the best of all: that DIY attitude and a nasty habit of writing bios in the third person. So enjoy, and remember: When in doubt, just think folky!
