Typically these 'quick fix' mastering guru's have a multi-band compressor that simply crush the audio to achieve maximum loudness. Proper mastering services will manually boost frequencies to fill out a mix and THEN bring up levels to a commercial standard, vs just smashing dynamics and making things loud.
